WRITING YOUR NONFICTION BOOK

Writing nonfiction books is hard work—unless you have a plan. Finding time to write is a challenge—unless you can do two things at once. Many people have the ingredients to be successful, published authors, Dan Poynter supplies the recipe.
Dan shares his organizational approach to writing a nonfiction book. He describes shortcuts that eliminate many of the traditional steps to creating the book. You will discover how to qualify the project, research on the Net, organize the project, draft the content and convert it into a PDF file for a literary agent or printing. He will show you how to embellish your book and make it more readable with sources for illustrations, quotations, stories and resources. How to set up and build your book rather than just write it.

You can make a difference and make a living with your book. A book will bring you more credibility, increased fame and a new profit center.

CHILDREN'S BOOKS:
On the move.

Thousands of people have written children's picture books that will never be published. Nothing is wrong with the books—many are very good; the barriers are too high. The publishers are swamped with submissions and the $20,000+ production cost is too high for self-publishing.

People buy $3.1 billion of children's books annually; the market is huge. The books sell for an average $7.34 in softcover and $14.51 in hardcover. It is hard to make money when four-color printing is so expensive and a minimum pressrun is 3,000 books.

Dan Poynter's answer is not a new way of printing; it is a whole—new approach that is more versatile, more fun for the child and a whole lot less expensive. Dan's multimedia show demonstrates electronic picture books with color, motion (video and animations), sound (audio) and the best part is the reproduction cost of 30 cents per copy.

Your children's book can be interactive; the child can click on icons for more information, a different story line, animations and sound. The book can even be personalized, making the child the main character. Children love computers and they find reading on a screen irresistible.

Discover how to write your children's book faster, promote it for less and get it distributed more effectively. Imagine your book being featured at Amazon.com and sold in CD format as well as a download. At last, you can get your book into “print”. Dan Poynter has the answers.

YOUNG AUTHORS
How They are Writing and Reading

Many older people are sitting like vegetables watching television. Younger people are re-inventing conversation. They stimulate their minds by reading, writing, thinking & interacting online. Young people are embracing New (Social) Media. They are writing for it and reading it. They know that print publications are declining while the future is in online media—and they want to be there. Unbound by convention, tradition and history, they are writing more and reading more than young people in the past.

In this program, you will discover:

¨ How Carolyn Woods was awarded a four-year university scholarship because
she wrote and published a book at the age of 16.
¨ The secret approach that make writing school papers quick, easy and fun.
¨ Where to publish shorter pieces and how to bank them for your book.
¨ How some books are written and read on mobile phones.
¨ Where to publish your eDocuments and eReports without cost.
¨ How to make money from writing.
¨ Where to get illustrations, stories and quotations to enhance your writing.
¨ Book researching and selling opportunities in forums, blogging, ezines, podcasting and social groupings such as Linked-In, SelfGrowth, MySpace, Bebo, Facebook and Friendster.
¨ Why you should spend more time online.

Young people can write, publish and make money while pursuing their studies.
This is a fascinating, encouraging and valuable school program.

WRITEAHOLISM - Humor
Just say NO to keyboards

Dan Poynter presents a humorous "stand-up" production that rings true to authors, publishers and other book people.
He confesses his addiction to writing (many of us write books because we have to, not because we want to.) He tells of his 12-step experience. (Every step turned into a chapter and he wound up with another darn book.) He pleads with his audience to break the cycle of keyboard abuse.

He continues on to reveal some of the innermost secrets of the book industry.

Dan singles out audience members for some of his comments; he works co-dependents (those who do not write but are being driven crazy by an author) and recovering writers (those who are tempted but have stayed away from keyboards for a while) into the presentation. Some of his commentary could even be true.

Audiences love this program as they identify with the addiction to writing that Dan describes. Laughter brings tears to their eyes.

This program is best presented as a keynote or following a meal.

Publishing Books

The Challenge: To print books for less, maintain smaller inventories and to wring maximum value out of a written Work.

The Solution: Discover digital printing and then multipurpose your core content into eBooks, audio, POD, special reports, articles, seminars, consulting and more. Dan will share The New Book Model: a plan for approaching agents and publishers while self-publishing at the same time.

BOOK PRODUCTION

A printed book is not enough. You can wring more value out of it. Some people would love to read your book but they can’t. They can read but they spend a lot of time behind the wheel as long-haul truckers, sales reps, or long-distance commuters. If your book is not available as an audiobook, they can’t benefit from your research. And this is just one production example.

This presentation is all about converting your manuscript into hard and softcover printed books, digital printing, when to use Print on Demand (POD), audiobooks, eBooks, LARGE PRINT books (for the visually impaired), etc.

Then Dan will cover turning out special reports, selling downloads, personalization/mass-customization, and more.

Essentially, this is Section Two (Production) of P-31, The New Book Model.

BOOK PROMOTION FOR WRITERS, INTROVERTS AND OTHER RELUCTANT MARKETERS.

It doesn’t matter if you sell out to a large New York publisher or publish yourself, the author must do the promotion. Publishers do not promote books; ask any author who has a publisher.

The challenge is that most writers are introverts. So, most writers do not want beat their chests on radio, on television or in bookstores.
What is an introverted writer to do?

Dan Poynter gives writers permission to stay home and write—and to promote remotely. He shares a number of effective, proven ways to publicize books without going out in public.

Writers love this presentation. They nod their heads as they identify with the introvert personality Dan describes. They feel relieved when Dan shows them how to publicize their books from home. They feel a kinship when Dan reveals that he is an introvert. Dan speaks about book promotion for introverts from experience.

Extroverts also have a unique challenge because publishers assume that all writers are introverted. They’ve learned from experience that most authors do not want to promote their books.

Extroverts should use these same foundational promotion techniques. Then they should convince their agent and publisher they will do a great job on radio, television and autographings.

Dan reveals how to take advantage of your introverted or extroverted personality to get attention for your book.

SELLING BOOKS ABROAD
Through Remote Marketing

Intro to Writing and PublishingYou can make a difference and make a living with your book. A book will bring you more credibility, fame and a new profit center.

This presentation shows international publishers how to reach the "Low-Hanging Fruit"; nearly 47% of the books in the world are sold in the U.S., Canada and the U.K. So it makes sense to approach those markets first.

Dan describes and quantifies the potential markets in each country.

He shares quick and easy ways to wring more value out of your Work by turning it into printed books (pBooks), eBooks, audiobooks, LARGE PRINT books and more. Your book will be available in any form the customer wants.

He puts you in touch with distributors and retailers in the U.S., Canada and the U.K. for each edition (version) of your book. The handout is packed with valuable resources.

Then he shows you how to promote your book inexpensively and easily from home via the Internet. Listen and learn today and start selling books abroad tomorrow.

Dan's speaking itineraries have him traveling more than 6,000 miles (9,000 kms)/week; he has been to 52 countries and the North Pole so far. He knows and understands both international publishing and international authors and publishers.

OPPORTUNITIES
Book Publishing: Past, Present & Future

Where is book publishing going and how did we get here?
What opportunities are emerging as the Book Trade evolves into new forms?

The large publishers are downsizing, the traditional brick & mortar stores are closing, and readers are embracing eBooks. These and other changes are affecting literary agents, wholesalers, distributors, reviewers, printers, truckers and everyone in the book trade. The winners will be the authors and smaller publishers.

This presentation is full of supporting statistics and scenarios.

Some changes we like and some we fear. Discover what is happening so you can take advantage of the changes rather than be buried by them. Remember,

I LEARNED FROM THAT
Book Publishing Lessons That Cost Time & Money

Dan Poynter recounts 17 fascinating things he has learned about publishing in his more than 40 years in the industry. Each is described with a story and advice.

It is unfortunate, and often expensive, when a publisher makes a mistake; it is tragic when they could have heard of the challenge and been prepared for it.
Learn from Dan’s experience.

You won’t want to miss learning from this guru of publishing who has strategically used his books to build a publishing empire and make him a sought after speaker!

THE ADVANTAGES
Of Being a Smaller Publisher

First-time authors and new publishers are often heard to say the publishing industry seems unfair; that it favors the large established publishers. That might have been true generations ago, it is not true today.

New technology and changes in the book publishing industry are enabling the author to keep control of his or her Work. Authors are both closer to their subject matter and closer to their reading audience than someone in an office building in New York.

Dan Poynter reveals the five major advantages authors and smaller publishers have over the establishment. He peppers his presentation with statistics, examples, inside advice and many promotion ideas. He inspires, equips and empowers his audience with his unique delivery. With an understanding of the challenges and their solutions, they are prepared and encouraged to make their book(s) known.

No one is being unfair to the newer author and smaller publisher. It is easy to play the game once you know the rules. It is easy to win if you have inside information. Dan supplies that information.

BOOK WRITING FOR SPEAKERS

This is the perfect presentation for professionals, coaches, consultants, mentors, speakers, clergy, professors and other leaders. It is an ideal spouse program.

You can make a difference and make a living with your book. A book will bring you more credibility, fame and a new profit center.

SPEAKING DISASTERS:
Lessons Learned While Dying on the Platform.

It is unfortunate when a speaker makes a mistake but it is tragic when he or she does not learn from the occasion and blunders again. Dan shares stories of speaking professionally; each is a lesson learned. Some events encouraged him to perform the same way another time but others warned him not to go there again.

After each story, he encourages questions and contributions from the audience. This program is about you and what you do. Learn so you will not embarrass yourself in front of your audience. Fascinating and fun.

“As an author of more than 120 books, a publisher since 1969 and a Certified Speaking Professional (CSP), Dan speaks from experience.”

THE BOOK GAME FOR SPEAKERS, EXTROVERTS &
OTHERS WHO ARE STALKING OPRAH

Every speaker needs a book to enhance credibility and to add a profit center. Speakers are good at what they do: speaking. They are the front people; they get out and bring back the business. The challenge is that most speakers are extroverts and many extroverts have short attention spans. Writing a book takes time and it is a difficult, solitary act–-well, it used to be.

You don’t have to be the writer of your book to be the author. Many of the books on the bestseller lists were not written by the authors named on the covers-–especially the books by celebrities.

Dan Poynter gives extroverts permission to work with an editor or ghostwriter. He shares how to find and work with people who can accelerate the book-writing process.

Extroverts love this presentation. They nod their heads as they identify with the outgoing personality Dan describes. They feel relieved when Dan shows them how to get help on their manuscript and how to convince their agent and publisher they will get out to tell the world about their book. Then he describes several fun ways to promote their books.

PACKAGING: GREAT TITLES & DESCRIPTIONS,
SELL MORE SPEECHES AND BOOKS

The title of your book or speech should capture attention.

The back cover of your book and the one-sheet for your speech should sell the message.

Without fabulous packaging, your audience is never likely to discover the contents. We’ve all heard you shouldn't judge a book by its cover but everyone does.

Anyone who says you can’t judge a book by its cover, has never met the buyer from Barnes & Noble.

Anyone who says one-sheets are not important has never spoken to a meeting planner.

Both speeches and books are judged by their packaging. There are so many to look at and so little time. All these very important decisions whether or not to buy your book or hire you are made on just one thing: the packaging. A great wrapper will sell more of you!

MEET THE PROS―TABLE TOPIC
Planning Your Book

What should you write about; is there a market for this subject; is the market large enough; are meeting planners buying this topic; are the readers easy to reach?

Whether you plan to sell out to a publisher or do-it-yourself, you have to gather market information. Has your book been done before; has it been done lately; has the topic been attacked from this angle; what is the median selling price for books on this shelf?

Dan Poynter, CSP, will show you how to research the subject, title and competition so that you will be sure you are writing a book that will have eager buyers and will appeal to ecstatic meeting planners.

Book writing is far easier when you can visualize your reader, have a plan for your material and know there is a waiting audience.

SPEAKAHOLISM (Humor)

Dan Poynter presents a humorous "stand-up" production that rings true to keynoters, breakout speakers and others in the speaking industry.

He confesses his addiction to professional speaking (many of us speak because we have to not because we want to.) He tells of his 12-step experience. (Every step turned into a signature story and he wound up with another darn speech.) He pleads with his audience to break the cycle of keynote abuse.

He continues on to reveal some of the innermost secrets of the professional speaking industry.

Dan singles out audience members for some of his comments; he works co-dependents (those who do not speak but are being driven crazy by a speaker) and recovering speakers (those who are tempted but have stayed away from microphones for a while) into the presentation. Some of his commentary could even be true.

Audiences love this program as they identify with the addiction to professional speaking that Dan describes. Laughter brings tears to their eyes.

This program is best presented as a keynote or following a meal.

A. Aviation History
And those who made it

Dan saves our history by carefully researching and documenting the details of past aviation exploits.

HAVE YOU SEEN MY PARACHUTE?
Jumping with nothing at all

Astonishing stories of those who have bailed out without a parachute and survived the fall. Trace the events of seven who landed with pieces of an aircraft and three who survived the fall with nothing at all.

Next, discover the astounding story of tail gunner Nicholas Alkemade who bailed out in 1944. Unable to reach his burning parachute, he jumped without it—and survived. Falling through trees and landing in snow, he lived to tell his tale.

The story does not end there, it is only the beginning. “Where did you bury the parachute?” asked the interrogator. Discover how he convinced the Gestapo that he was a combatant, not a spy (who could be shot). See how he was honored by the Luftwaffe and made a hero by flyers on both sides.

This is a “feel good” presentation on vertical aviation history and it is absolutely fascinating.

Which, naturally, leads us to the discussion of wing suits and the possibility of the human body being able to land without a parachute.

THE CATERPILLAR CLUB

The silk worm is a caterpillar; until 1941, parachute canopies were made of silk. Aviators who used parachutes to escape disabled aircraft were awarded a small gold Caterpillar pin and were inducted into the Caterpillar Club.

This presentation traces the origin of the Caterpillar Club and recounts the fascinating stories of people who were saved by a parachute. For example, you will discover how a future president of the U.S. was saved by a parachute in WW-II and how Charles Lindberg joined the Club four times before making his historic trans-Atlantic flight.

TINY BROADWICK
Aviation Pioneer

Tiny Broadwick was an exhibition jumper who traveled with air shows making more than 1,000 jumps between 1908 and 1922.

Tiny made her first jump at age 15 in 1908 at the North Carolina State Fair in Raleigh. She was the first woman to jump from an airplane, the first person to jump from a floatplane, the first person to make an intentional water jump and was the first person to open a parachute manually.

SAM PATCH
the famous jumper

In the early 1800's, Sam Patch jumped into the water from high places all over the Northeast United States. His secrets to survival were angle of water entry, holding your breath and strong drink. Sam was a pioneer of sub-terminal freefall.

On Friday the 13th in November, 1829, a cheering crowd watched a drunken Sam Patch make his last jump as he bravely stepped off the top of Genesee Falls in Rochester, New York.

This tiny island in the far western Pacific was settled by seven Caucasian families from Massachusetts in 1831. Chichi Jima became part of Japan in 1912. Part of the Bonin Island chain, it is not far from Iwo Jima.

The island was visited by Commodore Perry in 1853, was a strategic base in WW II, was where past-president George H. W. Bush bailed out in 1944, stored atomic field munitions for Korea and is still inhabited by Caucasian Japanese. Fascinating geography and a great piece of little-known history.

Our sport of skydiving has met the toughest enemy we have ever faced. Worse than government regulation, worse than the high price of lift tickets, and worse than super-tight main containers. The perennial enemy of the sport is gravity.
