ParaResources

A. ONE OF THE THINGS I DIDN'T LEARN IN SCHOOL WAS HOW TO CITE an Internet source in a footnote. There's a good reason for that. I went to school before Al Gore invented the Internet. Today, though, students and others need to cite material, and do it correctly. To the rescue comes Citation Styles Online which shows you all the "correct" versions of citation style.

D. WHO IS BUYING BOOKS? According to the American Booksellers Association:

The total amount of knowledge is doubling more quickly each year. The pessimist might say the market is small and shrinking. The optimist might say look at the size of the untapped potential market.

WHERE ARE THEY BUYING BOOKS? According to a study by the American Booksellers Association some years past, of the books sold through bookstores, 47.3% were sold through indepen-dents, 44.1% through chains, including super-stores, and 8.6% through used book shops. Warehouse clubs such as the Price Costco moved 46 million books.

Independent bookstores sold 28% of the books, the chains 20%, book clubs 16% and food/ drug/discount stores 19%.

Seventy-seven million books were sold through department stores, card/gift stores and hobby/ craft stores.

Books also account for 6% of all purchases made by mail.

No figures were available for book sales outside of the book trade. It is suspected that a very large, unreported number are sold through specialty shops (e.g., parachute books in parachute stores), catalogs, as premiums, etc. These non-traditional sales are usually easier to make, very large and much more lucrative.

The chain superstores are growing, the chain mall stores (with smaller selections) are shrink-ing, the independ-ents are being killed off by the chains, more and more specialty stores are carrying books, the online book sites are moving a lot of books and mail order is growing.

ParaThoughts

INSPIRE OTHERS
You can help many other people with a how-to book.

Your experience and research may inspire a lot of people.

Darcie Sanders and Martha M. Bullen were publishing professionals who wanted to stay home with their children. They looked for books on going from the workplace to the homebase but found that few existed. With research and interviews, they wrote the book they needed. Little, Brown and Company published Staying Home through five printings; now the authors publish it themselves.

Imagine the satisfaction you will feel in helping so many other people by sharing what you know.

“With a book, you can make both a living and a difference.” —Michael Larsen, literary agent.
